NEWS

DWARKANAUTH TAGORE – It has been formerly announced in the leading Hindoo journal of Calcutta, the Bashkur, that the family of the Tagores had, in councils assembled, resolved to punish their kinsman, Dwarkanauth Tagore, for visiting Europe, by expulsion from their society; and this non-intercourse was at once put into force, for on the subsequent arrival of the anniversary shaddru of Dwarkanauth’s wife, the usual invitations thereto were universally declined. The proscription is not regarded by the closest observers of Hindoo manners as the result of a high sense of religious duty, but as a manifestation of dislike of European connection. It is remarked, that the Tagore family was never distinguished for strict observance of the rigid rules of the Hindoo creed; and that the disregard which Dwarkanauth had, for some years previously to his departure for Europe, exhibited to minor Hindoo restrictions, ought, long and ago, if their present principles be sincere, have rendered him too polluted for his relatives’ society. The affair is one that deserves attention. News - Fisher's Colonial Magazine Commercial-Maritime Journal, Vol 3 No 11, May 1843, page 249
